Nurse News Bits
LaShon Self, Registered Nurse

We all agree that healthy children learn better.  Please rememember the role of the school nurse is:

To attend to school emergencies.
To assess injuries that occur while the child is at school.
To assess illnesses at school such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, etc...
To  evaluate rashes.
To administer medications with the proper paper forms from the physician and/or parent. The form is
online and may be printed out and completed at your convenience.  Just click on this link:
Medical Forms and under "Medical" click on "Medication at School".

School nurses are unable to do the following due to lack of time, training, and/or necessary equipment:

Attend to injuries that occurred at home and/or sporting events.
Diagnose illnesses such as strep throat.
Diagnose broken bones and/or sprains.

We ask that you assist our school nurse by doing the following:

Do not send your child to school with a fever of 100 degrees or above.  Please do not give the child fever
reducing medicine and then send him/her to school.
Do not send your child to school if he/she is vomiting or has diarrhea.
Do not send your child to school with an undiagnosed rash, inflamed eyes with a discharge, or has an
earache or toothache.

Please remember the St. Clair County Board policies concerning the following:

We can not keep stock medications.  Therefore, do not ask us if we have some Tylenol that we can give
your child. You must send this type of medication from home in the original bottle with the proper
medication form from the student handbook.
Do not send ANY medications to school with your child.  This could result in your child being punished
or another child becoming ill from taking another person's medication.  All medications,
prescriptions, and over the counter medicines, must be brought to the school nurse by a parent
and/or guardian in the original container with the proper medication form from the student
handbook.
